Northern Circuit
Conquer Kilimanjaro on Its Largest and Most Remote Trail

The Northern Circuit is Kilimanjaro's grandest route, the longest, most remote, and most rewarding trail on the mountain. Circumnavigating the entire northern slopes, it offers unmatched acclimatisation, near-complete solitude, and the highest summit success rates available anywhere on Kilimanjaro. This is the route for those who want to do this properly.
Start Location: Londorosi Gate (2,100m / 6,900ft)
Your journey begins deep in the western rainforest, far from the crowds of the southern routes. Over 9-10 days you will traverse every ecological zone on the mountain, from ancient rainforest to high alpine desert — before the final push to Uhuru Peak.
Day 1: Londorosi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp

-
Distance: ~8 km / 5 miles
-
Duration: 4-5 hours
-
Environment: Dense rainforest, vibrant birdlife, tropical flora, and the first glimpses of the mountain above the canopy.
Day 2: Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1 Camp

-
Distance: ~11 km / 7 miles
-
Duration: 5-6 hours
-
Environment: Emerging from forest into open moorland grasslands, with expanding views of the Shira Plateau and the mountain's western face.
Day 3: Shira 1 to Shira 2 Camp
-
Distance: ~8 km / 5 miles
-
Duration: 4-5 hours
-
Environment: Wide open high-altitude plains, volcanic formations, and panoramic views across the plateau. First significant altitude gain.
Day 4: Shira 2 to Moir Hut via Lava Tower
-
Distance: ~13 km / 8 miles
-
Duration: 6-7 hours
-
Environment: Ascend to Lava Tower (4,630m / 15,190ft) for critical acclimatisation, then traverse north to the remote Moir Hut. This is where the Northern Circuit begins its unique traverse away from all other routes.
Day 5: Moir Hut to Buffalo Camp
-
Distance: ~13 km / 8 miles
-
Duration: 6-7 hours
-
Environment: The most remote section of the entire route. Open northern wilderness, vast skies, and extraordinary silence. Virtually no other climbers. Buffalo graze on the lower slopes in the distance.
Day 6: Buffalo Camp to Third Cave Camp
-
Distance: ~14 km / 8.7 miles
-
Duration: 6-7 hours
-
Environment: Continuing the northern traverse across open moorland and heath. Dramatic views of Mawenzi Peak to the east. The mountain feels entirely yours.
Day 7: Third Cave Camp to School Hut
-
Distance: ~10 km / 6.2 miles
-
Duration: 5-6 hours

Summit Night: School Hut to Uhuru Peak & Return
-
Distance: ~4 km / 2.5 miles to the summit
-
Duration: 6-8 hours round trip, starting late at night
-
Environment: Windblown glaciers, icy terrain, and the most extraordinary sunrise in Africa awaiting you at Uhuru Peak (5,895m). Approaching the summit from the east via Gilman's Point gives a unique perspective seen by very few climbers — the crater rim at dawn, glaciers catching the first light, and the world spread below you in every direction.
Descent: Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
