Embark on the Scenic Journey of the Machame Route

The Machame Route, often called the “Whiskey Route,” is renowned for its breathtaking vistas, diverse ecosystems, and a balanced blend of challenge and beauty. It’s the most popular trail among climbers and offers an immersive experience in the mountain’s changing environment, all culminating in the unforgettable summit.

 

 

Starting Point: Machame Gate (1,800m / 5,900ft)

Your adventure begins at Kilimanjaro's western edge, where lush rainforest teems with vibrant flora and game. Here, you'll meet your guides, gear up, and start your ascent through the forest, filled with birdsong and the scent of tropical blooms.

Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp 

  • Distance: ~11 km / 6.8 miles 

  • Duration: 5-6 hours 

  • Environment: Rich rainforest, home to colobus monkeys, butterflies, and exotic birds.

 

 

Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira 2 Camp

  • Distance: ~8 km / 5 miles 

  • Duration: 4-5 hours 

  • Environment: Transition from lush jungle to Moore’s grassland, panoramic mountain views emerge as you climb.

Expect spectacular vistas of the mountain’s southern face, with sweeping valleys and the first hints of alpine terrain.

 

 

Day 3: Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp

  • Distance: ~10 km / 6.2 miles 

  • Duration: 6-7 hours 

  • Environment: From semi-desert to lush valley, with sights of Kilimanjaro's southern glaciers.

The Great Barranco Wall: Prepare for an exciting scramble up a steep, rocky bluff, an iconic highlight.

 

 

Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Valley Camp

  • Distance: ~6 km / 3.7 miles 

  • Duration: 4-5 hours 

  • Environment: Alpine meadows, breathtaking views of glaciers, and a gradual acclimatization.

 

 

Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

  • Distance: ~6 km / 3.7 miles 

  • Duration: 4-5 hours 

  • Environment: From lush valleys to the arid, rocky scree of the alpine zone, preparing for summit day.

Prepare your gear and psyche for the final push.

 

 

Summit Day: Barafu to Uhuru Peak

  • Distance: ~4 km / 2.5 miles (to the summit) 

  • Duration: 6-8 hours (round trip) 

  • Environment: Cold, windy, icy summit with glaciers and breathtaking views across Africa.

Start in the dark, climb to the Uhuru Peak (5,895m), and enjoy the triumphant dawn at the summit before descending back to Mweka Camp.

 

 

Descent: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

  • Distance: ~10 km / 6.2 miles 

  • Duration: 3-4 hours 

  • Environment: Dense rainforest, lush and teeming, with the reward of a jungle hike and celebratory mood.
