The Kilimanjaro Preperation Guide

Kilimanjaro is accessible to people with good general fitness, but it rewards those who prepare seriously. Altitude, not fitness, defeats most climbers. The right preparation dramatically improves your summit chances and your overall experience.

  1. Build Your Aerobic Base

Start a consistent training programme 12–16 weeks before your climb. Focus on cardiovascular endurance: hiking with a loaded pack, cycling, swimming, and stair climbing. The goal is sustained effort over 6–8 hours, not speed or strength.

         2. Train at Altitude Where Possible

If you have access to hills or mountains, use them. Day hikes above 2,500m are excellent preparation. If not, treadmill incline training at sustained effort is a valid substitute. The physiological stress of altitude cannot be fully simulated — but cardiovascular fitness helps your body cope.

         3. Understand Altitude Sickness

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) affects climbers regardless of fitness. Symptoms include headache, nausea, dizziness, and fatigue. The treatment is always descent. Learn to recognise it. Tell your guide immediately if you feel unwell — there is no shame in it, and early disclosure saves lives.

         4. Gear — Get It Right

The mountain spans five climate zones, from tropical rainforest to arctic summit. You need layering systems, waterproofs, insulated mid-layers, warm gloves, and a sleeping bag rated to at least -10°C. We provide a detailed packing list for every route. Follow it.

         5. Nutrition and Hydration on the Mountain

Eat at every meal, even when appetite is reduced by altitude — your body needs fuel. Drink 3–4 litres of water daily on the mountain. Avoid alcohol entirely during the climb. We provide nutritious, locally sourced meals throughout your expedition.

         6. Mental Preparation

Summit night, typically beginning after midnight at temperatures below -10°C, is the hardest experience most people will have ever faced. It helps to know that in advance, accept it, and commit to moving forward slowly and steadily. Pole pole, slowly slowly. It works.
