The Ramblings of a Once-Wannabe Adventurer

Adventure is what other people do. Right?

For the last 20 or 30 years, that thought has lingered in my mind like a fog, dulling the excitement of life. It’s easy to believe that climbing mountains, spending time in the wilderness, and finding real tranquility are activities reserved for a select few, the ones who seem to effortlessly go out and do it. They are the 'Adventurers', while many of us sit on the sidelines, admiring their journeys and dreaming of our own.

Countless people share these sentiments. Conversations often gravitate towards daydreaming about distant lands and thrilling experiences. “I would love to do something like that,” one might say. “How amazing would it be to go there?” But despite the yearning, too many remain anchored to their usual routines, watching documentaries about others living the lives they wish they could lead. The sofa becomes a stage for our dreams, but the spotlight never turns on us.

Yet, I believe there comes a moment in everyone’s life, a defining instant when you need to make a choice. It is the day you find the courage to take a risk or realize that something in your life no longer brings you joy. Many live with the anguish of not having taken that leap, while remarkably few carry the burden of regret for having tried.

Sometimes, you just need to say, “F*** it! I’m doing it!”

And that’s exactly what happened to me. A significant event made me confront my own mortality, a family crisis, followed by an illness that left me grappling with the realities of life.

It hit me hard, time marches on, indifferent to our dreams and aspirations. If I didn’t seize the day, I might never get the chance again.
