Gear You Need to Climb Kilimanjaro — Your Ultimate Packing Guide

Climbing Kilimanjaro isn’t just about strength and determination, it’s also about

having the right gear. When you’re facing varying weather, altitude, and rugged terrains,

your gear can be your best friend or your biggest challenge.

Don’t worry, with the right equipment and smart packing, you’ll be comfortable, safe,

and ready to conquer that peak. This guide will help you gear up for success.

1. Clothing Layers — Dress for Success

Layering is key to staying warm and dry.

• Base layers: Moisture-wicking thermal shirts and leggings. Nothing cotton, opt

for synthetics or merino wool.

• Insulation layers: Fleece or down jackets to keep you warm as you ascend.

• Outer layers: Waterproof, windproof jackets and pants to protect against rain

and wind.

• Additional: Hat for sun protection, warm hat for summit, neck buff, and gloves.

Tip: Pack extra layers, mountain weather can change rapidly!

2. Footwear — Your Foundation

• Hiking Boots: Invest in waterproof, supportive, well-broken-in boots with good

grip. Make sure they’re comfortable, blisters can derail your trip!

• Camp Shoes: Lightweight sandals or sneakers for walking around camp and

relaxing.

• Socks: Moisture-wicking, thermal socks, plus some extras for blister prevention.

3. Sleeping & Camping Equipment, Rest in Comfort

• Sleeping Bag: Rated for at least -10°C (14°F), ideally synthetic or down for

warmth and packability.

• Sleeping Mat: Insulated for comfort and to prevent the cold from below. (At Vertical Sky we supply an 8cm memory foam mattress as standard)

• Headlamp & Extra Batteries: For walking at night and early mornings.

4. Essential Accessories, Protect and Support

• Trekking Poles: Adjustable with comfortable grips for stability on steep terrain.

• Sunglasses: UV-protective, preferably glacier glasses for summit glare.

• Sunscreen & Lip Balm: SPF 30+ at minimum, UV exposure is intense at

altitude.

• Water Bottles / Hydration System: Carry at least 2L of water and stay hydrated!

• Water Purification: Tablets, filters, or bottles with purification systems.

5. Personal Items & Health

• Medications: Altitude sickness tablets, pain relievers, blister treatments.

• Hygiene: Wet wipes, hand sanitizer, toothbrush, toothpaste, biodegradable

soap.

• Toilet Supplies: Biodegradable toilet paper, small shovel if required.

• First Aid Kit: Customizable but include plasters, antiseptic, and altitude

medicines.

6. Optional but Nice to Have

• Camera & Batteries: Capture the memories.

• Power Bank: Keep your devices charged.

• Snacks & Treats: Energy bars, nuts, dried fruit.

• Books or Music: For entertainment in camp.

7. Special Gear Tips

• Pack Light & Smart: Use lightweight, durable gear. Every kilo matters!

• Use Packing Cubes: Keep your gear organized and accessible.

• Test Everything in Advance: Walk around with your pack, wear your boots, and

set up your sleep system.
